Typeface Design ::The Oriental Phantom Script 2011::
This is a typeface design project which is inspired by eastern asia calligraphy. I used the details from the traditional chinese brush writing to design a new type of european alphabet. The calligraphy has a long history in asia, people used the brush as a pen to write and to paint. The textures from the pen delivered a lot of personal emotions which asian people call it “Qi”, the spirit of the writing rhythm. So, the form of the texts usually depend on the person who wrote it, either abstract or tidy and readable.
The starting point was to try how much this asian style could be dominate the western alphabet? And how many emotion could it contain with? Surprisingly, the end result has the feminine style which goes with poetry or short text for artist books. And the calligraphy style also fits the different exotic flavors, which is nice to use it as a food packaging.

“City Food Scenery - Take Away Cloth”
50 x 50 cm
5 colours silk screen printed on linen
2011 April
The starting point was inspired by city food scenery. During the days being in Europe, I travelled and tried to figure out the eating pattern (or eating habit/ food culture) here. But I haven’t figured it out yet. Instead I noticed that there is something in common in those vivid big cities - food stands and street cafes. They stand every corner and contribute most to city life. No matter you live or visit the city, those cheap and fast easy food just perfectly fit into the daily routines.
I took those cheap, plastic take away containers and those street food as my graphic elements to create patterns that represent the modern city life, in food. For me pattern shows the repeating daily life and collage expresses the feeling from the “mixed” culture in every big city. As for the finish piece, inspired by “furoshiki”- Japanese traditional wrapping cloth and if you see through the history will find similar thing from chinese culture.
So, now you can use food to take away your food out! Yay!
